Content & Article by: Joshua @joshvillegass
EDM Tomorrow and festival goers were treated to no overlapping sets and beautiful displays of art at Sol Fest. The scene for this festival included multiple stages, art exhibts and one of Florida’s amazing springs. One could go from enjoying solid EDM, to admiring great art and then go for a dip at Vortex. It made for quite the experience. The combination of these things kept a smile on attendee’s faces. The popular saying,“Happy Sol!”, set the vibe throughout. It seemed as if everyone was enjoying themselves and were truly happy.
Sol Fest had the varying genres of EDM over the three days. Each act did not fail to deliver. Our personal favorite sets included Nghtmre, Dabin, Clooze, Big Gigantic, Rezz and LSD Dream. Nghtmre was Josh’s overall favorite set. He performed on the secondary stage late into the night. It was packed all the way to the back. He had played several of his classics and had everyone head banging. When it comes to dubstep, Nghtmre is one of the best in the game. Dabin’s set was also spectacular. He did a combination of dubstep and melodic bass. Upon shooting his set, Josh was amazed seeing people in their feels one second and then nodding their heads once again. Clooze was a big surprise. It was Josh’s first time experiencing her music. Clooze, the french producers, lit up and brought such an electric set. Big Gigantic’s set was the most anticipated set of the festival. It seemed like everywhere we went, there were groups of people looking forward to their set. Let’s just say they did not disappoint. Their set was for sure groovey and many people were dancing. LSD Dream did what he does best and performed a wavy set. It was cool to see people vibing to the elctronic music. His taste is for sure unique. Lastly, Rezz performed her usual dark techno. It was honestly a sight to see. Her switch ups honestly shocked the crowd. With the combination of this and the underlying acts, it is safe to say the EDM scene of Sol Fest was a solid.
Florida is well known for having world class springs. Most festival attendees were walking distance from not only their campgrounds and the stages, but also, Vortex Springs. Festival organizers chose an amazing location to host such an experience. Throughout the grounds, people could be seen carrying inflatables and just wearing swimming attire. At the springs, everyone was having a blast - many people were laying in the sand and having a cold drink. There were others who were lined up to jump on the various docks at Vortex. Would it be a true EDM festival if there aren’t people blasting some dubstep on their portable speakers? Well, Sol Fest did not have a shortage of that either. It was an interesting combination to hear EDM playing, while, hearing people shout as they jump into the water. It cannot be said enough how amazing the ability to enjoy a dip in Vortex was.
Sol Fest did not have a shortage of art displays. It was for sure comparable to Suwannee Hulaween, another Flordia music and arts festival. Many festival goers observed the various paintings that were laid out throughout festival grounds. Sol fest also had several interactive art displays, including: a robot that pumped out bubbles and colorful pipes that people could hit that played music notes. Another part of the festival that added to the experience were the dancers. These people were extremely talented. One group of dancers had fire rings and utilized those in their routine. Another group used acrobatic skills that propelled them through the air. This all could be seen during the sets and for sure had people taking their eyes off the stage here and there. Another thing that grabbed people’s attentions was this 50 foot demonstration that bursted a ball of fire. This was placed behind the crowd and would shoot out periodically - many of the festival attendees would be jamming out to set, then give a look of, “What was that?”, when it would go off. The art at Sol Fest truly had attendees in awe.
To wrap up, it was truly a remarkable time attending Sol Fest. The EDM sets, art and crowd were a treat for this 3 day fest. EDM Tomorrow is awaiting to see what Sol Fest will offer next time around.
